What numbers define superlative performance in parts inventory management and what are the best practices that help the “Best” be the “Best”.

It is absolutely no secret that parts inventory management is a complicated numbers and measurement game. More than any other profit center in a dealership, performance is measured by a complex set of data, statistics and calculations. Most of the performance ‘bench marks” employed in evaluating the parts department have been around for decades – but are they the right ones to define who is and is not doing a great job managing the inventory? According to Mike Nicholes, “For decades dealers have been using 'turn' and 'months of supply' to define the correct inventory; both are totally inaccurate and are only ratios that do not speak to the quality of the assortment of parts used to fill the need of technicians and customers.” Mike takes both an old and new look at parts inventory management benchmarks and will tell you how to define success in this important asset management position.

A "cloud of doubt" hangs over these often divergent accountings for your parts inventory investment. Find out why the gap exists and how to reconcile the two. Failure to do so regularly can hide big losses until it's too late!

Dealers, General Managers and Controllers will compare the General Ledger entry for parts inventory against what the Parts Manager says he actually has on hand. When unexplained differences climb to just small percentages of total inventory it puts a lot of money into a cloud of doubt.

Reconciling these two measures of the dealership investment in parts is vitally important. A lack of clear understanding of why they are yielding different dollar figures could represent lost profits or even theft.

Visit with Mike Nicholes as he discusses both the importance of this monthly exercise as well as how to achieve the goal of a fully reconciled parts inventory without the usual stress that this process causes.

    You Will Learn:

    ## The NUMBER ONE cause of inventory disputes between parts and accounting
    ## The “11th commandment” for resolving inventory discrepancies
    ## Tips for making necessary adjustments to inventory
    ## What to do about inventory shortages AND overages
    ## Use of an inventory reconciliation worksheet that makes your job a lot easier

adopt a perpetual inventory system and reconciliation process.
Mike Nicholes has earned international recognition as a parts department and fixed operations expert.
He has conducted hundreds of seminars during the past 3+ decades for more than 46 major vehicle

improved off-the-shelf fill to the service department technicians without a
significant increase in inventory investment. In addition, he has researched
and assisted many manufacturers as a subject matter expert in the area of
daily stock order implementation and automatic stock replenishment programs.

How and Why to Adopt a Perpetual Inventory System and Process

Annual Physical Parts Inventories are usually a headache… but also help hide issues and problems that can be eliminated with a well thought out monthly inventory count and adjustment process.

The biggest problem with reliance on a typical periodic physical count, is that many times all you can determine is that somewhere during the year things went off track. The physical count can and typically does put you back on track… but often the root cause goes undiscovered or repaired.

Mike Nicholes suggests that a physical count and accounting adjustment process conducted throughout the year is a much preferred system and in fact, can make the annual physical count obsolete.

Join us as Mike outlines this process and how you can make it work in your dealership or group.
